The
River
Severn is a wide river with high
tree-lined banks and is navigable for approximately 45 miles from Stourport
to Gloucester. It is well worth visiting both Worcester, with its
magnificent Cathedral, and Gloucester, now famous for its museums in the
historic docks. Narrowboat holidays along the River Severn are a good introduction to boating as there are
only 6 locks - and these are electrically operated by lock keepers. The
Severn offers relaxing narrowboat holidays where you can simply watch the world go by.
The picturesque River Avon twists and meanders through meadows for approximately 40 navigable miles between Tewkesbury and Stratford-upon-Avon through the Vale of Evesham. Pershore and Evesham are worth a visit on your narrowboat holiday as is Tewkesbury, famous for its Abbey. Stratford-upon-Avon is home to Shakespeare and when visiting by boat you can moor next to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Narrowboat holidays along the Avon are a little more active than on the Severn with 17 locks which are mostly unmanned. |
The man-made canal network reflects the incredible atmosphere of our industrial heritage whether passing through stunning countryside or built up towns. The Staffs & Worcester Canal is one of the most attractive canals in the country with locks, beautiful scenery and country pubs. The Worcester & Birmingham Canal is for the active or the canal enthusiast as it includes 58 locks (including the famous Tardebigge flight of 30 locks), tunnels and swing bridges. The Gloucester to Sharpness canal is a wide waterway with a plethora of swing bridges. All are manned and this is a route for lazy, relaxing boating. We are fortunate that our base on the River Severn allows such a variety of narrowboat holidays. The dilemma is to choose the best route to suit you. Many opt for an itinerary that combines both river and canal cruising as this offers variety with a contrast between more gentle river cruising and the fun of more active narrowboat holidays.
